Chasen, chawan, chashaku.
Choosing tools for your first bowl.
The first three tools to know are a chasen for mixing matcha and water, a chawan for preparing and enjoying it, and a chashaku for scooping matcha. Start with pieces that feel accessible and easy to care for.

Learn what each tool does
A chasen is a bamboo whisk used to combine matcha and water. A chawan gives the whisk room to move, and a chashaku is used to scoop matcha. A measuring spoon can also be a useful starting point.
Choose a whisk you can handle comfortably
Look for a bamboo chasen described for matcha. Being able to whisk without forcing the tips and to rinse and dry it after use will make the practice easier to continue.
Check that the bowl gives you room to whisk
Consider the width for whisking, the weight in your hands and the capacity. Confirm that it is intended for food use, and read the care instructions in the product information.
Care for tools according to their guidance
Rinse a chasen gently with water and let it dry completely in a well-ventilated place. Care varies by material for bowls and scoops, so follow the maker’s or retailer’s instructions.
