How to whisk matcha
at home.
With matcha, a bamboo chasen and a wide bowl, you can make a bowl at home. Treat the producer’s instructions for your matcha as your starting point rather than a single fixed recipe.

Set out the essentials
Prepare matcha intended for drinking, a bamboo whisk and a bowl wide enough for the whisk to move freely. Sifting matcha beforehand can help prevent lumps.
Warm the bowl and prepare the water
Warm the bowl with hot water, then dry it. Check the product guidance for water amount and temperature, and begin with the maker’s recommendation.
Whisk briskly back and forth
Mix the matcha with a little water first, then add the rest. Move the chasen back and forth with your wrist without pressing it hard against the bowl.
Drink while warm and care for the whisk
Enjoy the bowl without letting it sit. Rinse the chasen gently with water, then let it dry completely in a well-ventilated place.
